Arya Vihara (meaning 'Noble Abode' in Sanskrit) is the original name of the residential property now known as the Krishnamurti Retreat. Built at the end of the nineteenth century, it was regularly used by J. Krishnamurti during the time he stayed in Ojai. It is surrounded by lawns, rose gardens and citrus orchards, and offers easy access to hiking trails into the near-by mountains of the Los Padres National Forest.
The spacious, ranch-style building retains the atmosphere and coziness of a private home. Its central portion is taken up by a large reading room which opens on to a contiguous dining area. There are two double guest rooms, each with two bedrooms and bathroom, on the east and west wings of the house, affording views of the lawns and flower gardens. Two smaller single rooms with bathroom are situated close to the front and kitchen entrances, respectively. There is also a small sitting room between the kitchen and the dining room where Krishnamurti used to give private interviews during the war years when he resided almost uninterruptedly on the East End property. There is a fully-equipped kitchen for the use of guests (vegetarian food only please). On the western side of the house, there is a wide veranda with table and chairs, while toward the east a covered patio offers a shaded area for dining and/or study.
The Retreat has a limited collection of Krishnamurti books and audio & video tapes for use by the guests, while, a minute's walk away, the Library & Archives Building houses the complete collection. Guests are invited to make free use of the property, and also may take out books and videos from the Library.
If you wish to eat out, there are a fair variety of restaurants in town, a ten-minute drive from the Retreat. There is, however, no public transportation to the Retreat, although within the confines of the town there is a regular, low-cost bus service. If you don't have a car and you need to shop for your food, the retreat manager may assist you with that.
The Krishnamurti Retreat has a two-day minimum and a three-week maximum stay, and the cost per night, including a self-service breakfast, is $55 for single and $85 for double occupancy. Please note that the Retreat is for adults; we regret that we are not able to accommodate children or pets.
For the most part, the Retreat is meant to allow for individual study; thus there is no scheduled group activity except the following: every Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m. there is a dialogue meeting in the reading room of the Library, which is open to the public. Any participant may suggest a topic or raise a relevant question at this dialogue which has an open forum.
