Kindly be mindful of the following points regarding the forum. Dialogue is thinking together - it isn’t debate - and it's inquiring together without end point or agenda. People come into the dialogue from their own place of understanding, which is not going to be your place of understanding. We’re here to communicate together, learn together and gain insight into our own thought; to receive and share our observations, not impose our views on others. Address the comments in a polite, considerate manner. By all means, ask for clarification, but challenge the comment, not the commentator. We don’t know enough about the others to make those judgments and we’re here to learn about ourselves, not to correct another's perceived personality flaws. If a comment brings an emotional response, look at that. Do you feel the need to defend? To attack? Time for some looking inward. Self protection results in war. Besides, the war is in each of us. Stop that war, and the rest will take care of itself. (For some suggestions on the nature of dialogue, please click here)

new Forum account registration system is now online!

Dear forum members,

In an effort to eliminate the spam problem, automatic registration will remain permanently disabled and prospective members will now be required to send us an email requesting the creation of a new account.

Member RJ deserves our thanks for suggesting this to me recently as a possible solution.

Regards,

Eric

Actually, if truth be known, the technical wizards behind the scenes deserve most of the credit.

Unfortunately, a high proportion of "new members" still seem to be spammers since there are spam links in their profile pages.

Re: new Forum account registration system is now online!

my son is in the Hacker Society at his college, it is a university club for the technologically inclined.  He likes to point out that hackers have a bad name because real hacking is about problem solving, not problem creation.  Spammers will continue to exploit the changes made by any authority, but the effort to at least make it more difficult is appreciated.  I have tuned them out like the train that goes by every night, so it no longer really matters.  That is easy enough too, at the level it is happening now, which is fairly small.

Re: new Forum account registration system is now online!

It's not a matter of who they're bothering; it's actually of interest to see how these things work.

I did a bunch of research a while back, but basically, half of a spammer's goal is to place spam links on a site - having the links there even unclicked raises the spam sites ranking in search indexes, and also potentially harms the KFA's site ranking. There is something called blacklisting which can happen too, though not too familiar with it.

So, also, it's a matter of good housekeeping. There are established best practices for forums. Too bad Signpost isn't on the forum anymore - he'd probably have more knowledge.

yes, he did know his way around these things.  And I hear you beans, but when in rome I find it best to figure out how to ignore the romans...begging pardons from any romans lanced by the metaphor.
