Kindly be mindful of the following points regarding the forum. Dialogue is thinking together - it isn’t debate - and it's inquiring together without end point or agenda. People come into the dialogue from their own place of understanding, which is not going to be your place of understanding. We’re here to communicate together, learn together and gain insight into our own thought; to receive and share our observations, not impose our views on others. Address the comments in a polite, considerate manner. By all means, ask for clarification, but challenge the comment, not the commentator. We don’t know enough about the others to make those judgments and we’re here to learn about ourselves, not to correct another's perceived personality flaws. If a comment brings an emotional response, look at that. Do you feel the need to defend? To attack? Time for some looking inward. Self protection results in war. Besides, the war is in each of us. Stop that war, and the rest will take care of itself. (For some suggestions on the nature of dialogue, please click here)

Observation is an approach of sorts. So other descriptive terms could also apply such as "way", "handle".

The target of observation is "what is". So when one is paying attention, observing, one may see the thought of the self, the self-image.

Ha, ha, ha. Very funny.

Observation with a target is not observation, because if I project a target I will indeed see it, but were I observing from the very beginning, there would be no target to see!!!

Beans, you're missing the big picture here: THERE IS NO APPROACH. The end.

We could debate til the cows come home about whether observation is an approach, and use all caps, and then maybe some #$% symbols, but let's not.

:-)

It's more important to see that "what is" is not a projected target, it is "what is".

I'm showing you the facts, 'till the cows come home, if necessary.

Surely, inwardly, there is no what is, uhm?

Bruce, you obviously are holding an image of what a person who is "serious" looks like. If someone tells you they are dedicated to observation and learning about themselves, who are you to say that, no, they're not?

Come on, you're too young to become rigid and closed off. Look around and question what you see.

I don't care about the looks: it's the imagery which denotes a lack of seriousness. I'm telling you what I see, but you reject it: just look for yourself.

Bruce, a person does not have to live like a Spartan to be "serious". They are allowed to have joy, fun, and yes, cheerfulness.

I understand that: I've only described what's happening in someone's brain when they post an image of the poster, in the middle of a discussion: it becomes also a distraction.

I'm smiling at the picture, but I also see how it was created in the brain.

Now you are bringing your own agenda to the discussion: to express bruce trying to smile. Which is a distraction, though.

True.  It's only an inattentive mind that is distracted, or rather an inattentive mind is in itself a distraction.  To an attentive mind there are no distractions.
