"If you have died to one of your pleasures, the smallest or the greatest, naturally, without any enforcement or argument, then you will know what it means to die. To die is to have a mind that is completely empty of itself, empty of its daily longing, pleasure; and agonies."

Dying to pleasures as they arise, one is alone. When one lays claim to being one who is alone, this is a pleasure that has not been died to. An image of the self that is identified with and takes hold, gives one a feeling of a center, comfort, and certainty.

Yes, fear from existence without "control" or a predefined plan of action - fear of floating in the unknown.
The idea that is a center gives the body/brain an image to refer to and act in accordance with.

Without a full, constant understanding, one is just dabbling. And can't recognize signs of disease....regardless of the green rubber clogs ;-)

I think what Hermann is suggesting behind the color of his words is that to look at what it means to be........................(put anything you want here), is to be caught up in the relationship of "I" the story and the feeling, which when looked at is "I" the story.
When one is truly alone, then there nothing noticed...as I see it. The problem of Hermann's perspective, as I see it, is that he finds something wrong with that. Why not call it what it is and end it there. Why see it as disease or a problem for someone else. Isn't that what we do when we try to understand ourselves. We don't judge or ridicule what we find........we notice it.
We move away from it or toward it but if we see it as a problem then we re-attach to it.
When I draw portraits, I get lost in it.....I cannot come back and tell you what it means to get lost in art..............I can just notice that it happens...afterwards.
